Caroline had lost count of how many times Lucas had harmed himself. But the moment she saw him sitting in the bathtub again, covered in blood, it still felt like a punch to the gut.

"Does it not hurt? Or do you just want it to hurt?" Caroline stepped into the bathroom, not planning on leaving, not calling Daniel Reid either. She pulled over a small stool and sat beside the tub.
Lucas was wearing light gray pajamas, most of which were soaked in blood. His face was ghostly pale. His hands trembled as he clutched a sharp piece of broken glass, dragging it again and again across his wrist. His entire body was shaking.
"I'm sorry… I'm sorry, Aunt Caroline… I can't stop myself," he choked out.
Caroline looked down, her eyes welling with tears.
