Gage suddenly seemed to remember something. "Wait here!" he said, before rushing into the house. A moment later, the sound of rummaging echoed from inside.
Before long, he emerged, holding a dust-covered wooden box. He handed it to Matthew. "This was left behind by my grandfather. But no one ever reads it. My father always said that the more you read this stuff, the poorer you get.
"When I heard that, I figured it was cursed or something–I never dared to look at it. I never wanted my sons to end up as farmers.
"I always hoped that Kyler could become a scholar, like our ancestors—maybe even a great scholar. If not that, at least an official.
"I sent Virgil to learn taekwondo. That turned out to be a scam—all that jumping around, but when it came to a real fight, it was useless. In the end, both of them still became farmers. Some people are just born unlucky."
