The Ashworth residence was heavy with tension. Natasha had locked herself in her room, refusing to eat and drink. She even ignored Helena's desperate pleas. Luther's parting words, "You disgust me," gnawed at her heart day and night, until they had stripped her of all pride and devoured every last hope. Helena stood guard at the door, frantic with worry but utterly helpless. She dialed Luther's number again. Instead of the usual busy tone, an automated message greeted her. "The person you are trying to reach is unavailable." Refusing to give up, she called the Strudwick residence's number, and the butler answered. "Mr. Strudwick is not at home.
