“Does Mr. Fuller have a soft spot for children?” Violet couldn’t help asking.
She’d noticed it that day when they went shopping. No matter how cold or detached Frederick appeared, the moment Jane spoke to him, his whole demeanor softened—his stern features melting into a rare, springlike warmth. And yet, the second the child left his line of sight, he reverted to his usual distant self, exuding an intimidating aura that pushed people away.
Fisher and Terry exchanged a quick glance. Of course she noticed. But this wasn’t a question they could answer simply.
Terry gave her a half-smile and replied diplomatically, “The young master doesn’t particularly like children. He only likes Jane.”
Violet leaned in, eyes sparkling. “Is it because she’s adorable?”
Fisher shook his head, his answer as concise as it was cryptic: “No. It’s because she’s Jane.”
Violet blinked, unsure whether to be enlightened or further confused.
