Summer rains arrive without warning. That evening, the mountains were once again drenched in a torrential downpour.
Reyes returned through the storm to find Shobby still in Helen’s room, reading her a bedtime story.
"Daddy!"
The moment Helen spotted the raincoat-clad figure in the doorway, her eyes lit up with pure delight.
But just as quickly, she remembered Mom didn’t like Daddy. Didn’t like her being too close to him, either. The light in her eyes dimmed.
Choosing Mom meant giving up Daddy.
Mom always told her Daddy wasn’t a good man. But to Helen, he was a good father better than Mom, even.
Shobby closed the storybook, her gaze steady as she met Reyes’s eyes. "We need to talk," she said firmly.
Helen knew exactly what Mom wanted to discuss. Panic flared in her chest, and she grabbed Shobby’s sleeve. "Mom, can I talk to Daddy first? Just for a little while?"
Shobby’s eyes chilled, suspicion flickering in them as she studied her daughter.
