But remembering what the doctor had told me, I shook my head. ‘No. Natural birth is better for the babies.’
‘That’s right,’ the midwife said reassuringly. ‘It’s better for the babies, and it helps your body recover faster too. Don’t worry, Mrs Laurent. That other case was an exception. The baby was oversized and should’ve been delivered surgically from the start, but the family refused. Since you’re having twins, both are actually smaller than the usual size. You’ll be fine.’
She was an experienced woman in her forties, with a kind, calm face.
Her words reassured me slightly. I nodded heavily.
I could do this. I would get through it.
‘No. You’re in too much pain,’ Ashton said.
‘Don’t worry. I can handle it.’ The pain was still there, but the determination to bring my babies safely into the world had taken over. My eyes steadied. ‘I’ll deliver them naturally. Help me up. I need to walk.’
Ashton’s expression showed he didn’t agree.
