Bethany had gone to a beauty salon in the morning and returned to the villa around noon.
After days of dealing with hotel affairs, even she could tell that her complexion had grown visibly worn.
Back home, she drank the soup Jane had prepared, and after eating her fill, curled up on the couch and fell into an afternoon nap.
She did not know how long she had slept when a flash of lightning tore across the sky, followed by heavy raindrops pounding against the floor-to-ceiling windows. The urgent rhythm of rain stirred an inexplicable sense of unease in her chest.
